Land Rover Discovery – Carservice The discovery was introduced in the UK in 1989. The company code-named the vehicle “Project Jay”. The new model is based on the chassis and transmission of the more upmarket Range Rover, but with a lower price for a larger market segment and intended to compete with Japanese offerings. This discovery was the generation of only four cylinder engines.

The discovery was initially available only as a three-door and five door became available the following year. Both were equipped with five seats, with the option of having two extra seats installed in the trunk. Land Rover hired an outside consultant, Conran Design Group, to design the interior.
